If you struggle to write good resume objectives, you aren’t the only one.  Resume objectives are often the portion of the resume where people tend to get stuck.  This is probably because it is hard to say much in only a few sentences, but you need those sentences to really say as much as they can.  Great resume objectives are concise and meaningful; they tell an employer what you are looking for a in a new position, and why they should give it to you.  Your resume lists all the things you have done so far, but your objectives state what you want to do next.

Fewer words, more meaning

Your resume objectives should be relatively short, so you will need to say a lot without using a lot of extra words.  There are some tricks you can use in order to say more without making it too long.  Look over every sentence and see if there are any words you can cut or any sentences where you could get the same meaning with fewer words.  Replace phrases wherever possible with a shorter version, but don’t sacrifice meaning or quality.

Save the details for later

Your resume objectives are a quick overview of your goal and your qualifications.  You have the entire resume to list where you went to school, where you have worked and how much money you have made.  Don’t get into these details when you write your resume objectives.  While you should have something clear and meaningful to say, this is not the place to offer specifics.

It’s about your ambitions

Declare your ambitions loud and clear in your resume objectives; that is precisely what they are for.  State what type of position you want to advance to, and give good reasons why an employer reading your resume should consider you for such a position.  This is the place to declare your goals, where you want to move in your career and what job would help you to get there.  People don’t usually write a resume to get a job just like what they already have.  They are looking to make a move, get more responsibility, and make more money.  While you might not want to state that you want a higher salary, you should definitely say that you want more advanced work to take on.

Objectives should be easy to locate

Think of your resume objectives as the introduction to your resume.  They say: I am looking for this type of position, and here is why.  The objectives introduce the goal, and the resume backs up why you are qualified.  Place the objectives at the top of your resume and make them visible.  Don’t overdo it with font size, but to make sure they can’t be missed.

Your resume objectives are the way you can say what you want out of your working life.  Make sure they state things so that there is no doubt of your goals.
